Tin, Rock, Sand
Tin, Rock, Sand was written for Grace Thomas for her final recital at the Royal Welsh
College of Music and Drama. Like myself, Grace hails from Cornwall where we both
have found our roots in the Cornish brass band scene. As the name suggests, the work
is in three parts of which I have used a different natural material to depict various
elements of Cornwall. Tin pays homage to the industrial past of Cornwall with its
various tin mines scattered across the county, although dwindling from closures in
the early 90s they are now making a return with the need for electric car batteries. Rock is a reflective work which is a tribute to Roche Rock just outside of the town of Bugle, home of the popular brass band contest. Roche Rock has sat upon it a ruined chapel which is said to of been home to a monk, the area is often used as a scenic spot. Sand represents the busy beaches of Cornwall that are a draw to many tourists in the summer seasons.
