The Saga of Ivar the Boneless for Concert Band

Written for The Band of HM Royal Marines & The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces.
 
The work opens in a world shaped by the beauty and severity of the far north. Endless sheets of ice, drifting snow, and the quiet glow of winter light create a landscape that is both majestic and unforgiving. Within this frozen realm, the legend of Ivar’s birth emerges—rumours of a child cursed, born frail, and destined to carry a name that stirred both sympathy and fear: “the Boneless.
”
The atmosphere suggests stillness and isolation, yet also a stark beauty, as if the land itself is watching over
the child. This section evokes a sense of myth woven into the frozen air, where nature and destiny feel inseparable.
 
The second section drives forward with urgency, portraying Ivar’s rise as a leader of the Great Heathen Army and the swift invasion of England. The momentum of marching forces and sudden strikes forms the core of this movement. As the Vikings approach, the English are represented by the calls of town trumpeters—warning signals echoing across settlements, desperate attempts to alert villagers of the advancing army. Brief flashes of destruction
appear: villages set ablaze, rooftops glowing in the darkness, and smoke trailing behind the invaders. These moments underscore the stark reality of conquest while keeping the focus on the campaign’s unstoppable force.
 
The final section reflects on Ivar’s legacy long after his campaigns have faded. Ideas from the opening return as softened memories, turning the focus toward the quiet of his imagined final resting place. Recent theories suggest he may lie beneath a coastal mound in Cumbria known in medieval sources as “The King’s Mound,” thought by some archaeologists to conceal an elite Viking ship burial possibly linked to Ivar. In the music, this site becomes a place of calm beauty—far removed from the violence of his age— where the land holds no trace of the turmoil that once defined his name.
